Bob Siebenberg - Complete Discography

1987 - Free As a Bird

Posted in Discography

Recording the album 'Free As a Bird' was very different from recording any other album in the past. The drum tracks were ready even before I got to the studio, so I just had to give them a human touch without the company of any other musician. The whole process was too cold, and at no point did we have the feeling of being a band. Until then we had always had real drums and I had done all my parts with complete freedom, but on that album I ended playing on a drum machine and that was not natural at all.

Personally I don't mind recording an album with the help of computers. However, I have always been kind of against it just in concept. I think that music needs to breathe, and I don't see anything wrong with the chorus kicking up a bit and back down in the verses where it relaxes again. I don't see anything wrong with that, but I think that the click thing and the computer thing have kind of made it go cold a little bit. You lose the emotion of a musician in some cases, it is just people in there playing instruments that make it what it is. As soon as you lock that to something you are detracting from it I think. Looking back, I think it was a mistake to record that album as we recorded it.
